Our Sound Traveler mix series is back, this time with a rising DJ collective from Nairobi, EA Wave.
EA Wave (short for East African Wave) consists of Nairobi-based DJs/producers Ukweli, Sichangi, Hiribae, Nu Fvnk and Jinku.
Despite, or perhaps because of, their different styles, the five men work in synergy both collectively and individually. Their music has attracted the attention of fellow musicians like US-based Kenyan artist Karun and Ghanaian singer Jojo Abot. The collective, who made their Boiler Room Live debut a couple of months ago, is also one of the first East African electronic acts to play in festivals in Uganda, Sweden and Reunion Island. For the past year, the collective has been routinely releasing one or more tracks every Wednesday through their #WaveyWednesday initiative.
Outside music, EA Wave’s combined energies and creativity have also inspired the birth of a new movement in Nairobi’s urban community, which has been dubbed #NuNairobi by The Fader.
Representing the members, Jinku has sent us a mix especially for Globetrotter. “For this particular mix, I took inspiration from the name ‘Globetrotter’ and fused music from different cultures, giving a global palette of sounds as well as music from EA Wave members exclusive to this mix.”
